Position Summary:
SUNY Ulster County Community College, a two-year branch of the State University of New York located ninety miles north of New York City in the Catskill Mountains, is currently accepting applications for a Learning Strategies Specialist.
Under the direct supervision of the Director of The Learning Center, the Learning Strategies Specialist provides academic support assistance services that includes assessments, tutoring, assisting students with learning disabilities/special needs, academic planning and an educational study plan to the student population at SUNY Ulster.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Use assessment tools to help students identify their strengths and weaknesses in studying and learning.
- Arrange and conduct workshops for students (classroom visits, one-on-one or group) on topics such as time management, test anxiety, and reading comprehension (SQ3R) method.
- Tutor students with learning disabilities by using methods developed for the individual student.
- Provide academic skills tutoring and counseling.
- Arrange and conduct presentations to faculty and staff on topics concerning student learning and study skills.
- Communicate and follow up with instructors on student referrals.
- Attend SUNY Ulster open house and other College events when needed.
- Cultivate a close working relationship with the academic departments.
- Work in conjunction with the professional and peer tutor programs and other education specialists when needed.
- Remain current with professional development and best practices in the utilization of student learning, tutoring and studying practices by attending workshops, conferences, and course work.
- Monitor the tracking of the Early Alert System.
- Embed and provide study strategies to students who are in classes with high DFW rates.
- Monitor and advise the P1 and P2 students by providing study skills to encourage independent learning.
- Consult on policies and procedures related to students with academic needs.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor degree in Education or closely related field required. Experience with learning and skills assessments.
And
- Commitment to community college goals and objectives of providing quality programs and services for culturally, socio-economically, ethnically, and academically diverse students and students with disabilities; personal qualities to work effectively and with sensitivity in a multicultural environment; awareness of and commitment to the needs of non-traditional and/or re-entry students with diverse abilities and interests.
Preferred Qualifications
- Ability to develop and monitor individual study success plans.
- Some experience tutoring or teaching individuals with learning disabilities.
- Commitment and ability to work effectively and harmoniously with colleagues, individually and in teams.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated organizational skills, attention to detail, motivation, and high degree of openness to new approaches and ideas.
- Ability to work in a fast paced, collaborative environment.
- Working knowledge of computer assisted instruction software systems.
Salary:
This position is a full-time, 10 month appointment at 35 hours per week. An initial base salary of $52,500 prorated for a 10-month appointment with an excellent benefits package. This position is contingent upon adequate funding.Additional Information
